Add Photos to CAD Drawings Using Your Smartphone or Tablet

Projects evolve over time—adding photos to CAD drawings can give some real-life context to on-the-job changes and progression. Best of all, it’s easy with AutoCAD 360.

You can add photos in two ways:

  • Insert a photo into a drawing
  • Attach a Design Feed post with a photo

Why add photos?

  • Photos provide context for the CAD drawings you’re working with.
  • Changes that are specific to particular areas of a jobsite can be tracked over time and easily accessed.
  • You can add comments to photos so you can review your thought process after the fact.
  • And photos can be shared with team members, who can add their input without having to make a site visit.

Adding photos to CAD drawings is simple. Here’s how:

How to insert photos into a drawing

  1. Open your drawing and click the Markup menu—you should see a photo option.
  2. Click the photo icon and choose From Gallery for existing photos or From Camera to add a new photo.
  3. To move a photo, click and hold on the photo until you can see it is selected. Move it where you need it to be.
  4. To resize a photo, select one of the corners and drag it to the desired size (your aspect ratio will be retained).

Note: Make sure you’re in the area of the drawing where you want to place the photo before inserting it.

How to attach a Design Feed post with a photo

  1. With your design feed open, click Create Post.
  2. Click the photo icon and choose From Gallery for existing photos or From Camera to add a new photo.
  3. When the photo is added, click Post to add the photo to your drawing.

Note: Three photos can be added per post. Posts can be pinned to a target area or an exact position in the drawing and can be shared with other AutoCAD 360 users from the design feed.

We hope that was helpful. Stay tuned for more AutoCAD 360 learning coming soon!

The conference featured expert panels covering a variety of interesting topics for tablet app developers. AutoCAD 360 took the award for both our iOS and Android apps in the Business category of “In-The-Field,” which we were incredibly honored to receive.

Like any good trip to New York, we also managed to indulge in some amazing food and culture while we were visiting. Highlights include mind-blowing deli visits, skyscraper gawking, and lots of great people watching. Good times indeed.

And of course you, our AutoCAD 360 users, were in our hearts the whole visit. Thanks to your support, our app development continues day in and day out; you’ve made our growth possible. So really, this award belongs to all of you, too. Thank you for helping us achieve it!

AutoCAD 360 2.1 Is Here!

Now that your summer vacations are coming to an end, the new version of AutoCAD 360 is here to make your transition back to work smoother than ever! Here’s a quick rundown of what’s new in version 2.1.

Those of you on iOS devices with full retina support will be able to enjoy stunning high-resolution display of your drawings. With the new full retina support there are no more fuzzy pixels—your drawings will look sharper than ever!

To keep you up-to-date on everything that happened while you were away and to make your everyday collaboration with co-workers easier, we added notifications. These allow you to get information in-real time, saving you time and money. Push notifications on your device will automatically inform you when:

  • Someone tags you in a drawing (in a Design Feed comment)
  • Someone replies to a comment you posted
  • Someone shares a drawing with you
  • Someone shares a folder with you

Tapping the notification will open the relevant drawing and take you directly to the relevant message so you don’t have to look for it. If you open your account on a different device, you’ll still be able to see all of the notifications clearly in the drawings manager. You can control the push notifications through the notification settings of your device.

Speaking of saving time, you’ll be glad to discover a much faster app loading time.

We got a lot of requests for this next feature and we didn’t want to disappoint you. If you’re working outside and the sun is making it hard for you to see the drawing, or if your drawing happens to use a similar color to the background, you can now enter the “Account settings” on the side bar menu to change the background color of your drawing. You can even choose a different color for your model space and your layout.

Those of you who are PDF users will be glad to know we improved PDF support to get you a better display of your drawings. We received a lot of requests around PDF support and want you to know that we’re responding!

In the previous version of AutoCAD 360, the app would display the units of measure that were defined in the original drawing. Sometimes, however, users would start adding dimensions and realize that the unit type wasn’t what it should be. From now on, you can easily solve this problem and change the unit type display to whatever type you need, right from your mobile. Just enter the drawing setting and choose between metric and imperial unit types (or no type at all).

All of these features are available in the free version of AutoCAD 360.

There is one little treat for our Pro users—a feature that was widely requested: Different properties were added to the Properties display on your mobile.

Let us know what you think of the new and improved AutoCAD 360!

Send your comments, requests and problems to feedback@autocad360.com.
