Simpler, Friendlier Terms Of Use
11:37 am  .   March 17, 2011  .   admin

We get questions every so often about our terms of use from users who want to use AutoCAD WS within their company. They want to know what rights Autodesk has regarding their files, who can access them and more.

To make things easier we’ve just published a simpler, friendlier terms of use to help make it easier to use AutoCAD WS both individually and within your company.

Here are a few answers to commonly asked questions:

Q: Can I use AutoCAD WS in a professional context within my company?

A: Definitely. AutoCAD WS is a web and mobile app built by Autodesk from the ground up for the professional AutoCAD and DWG user.

Q: Who owns the drawings I upload?

A: You do. AutoCAD WS does not claim any ownership of your content. We will only ever access your content to the extent needed for us to maintain and provide you with the AutoCAD WS service.

Q: What can other people do with the files I upload?

A: Only what you allow them to. Your files are only accessible to other users with whom you have explicitly shared the files. Even then, they are subject to the permissions you set. So you can control whether your collaborators can merely view the drawing or edit it and download a copy to their computer. You can control the permissions for each individual drawing that you choose to share and you can withdraw permissions at any time. For more information about setting permissions read the Sharing tutorial.

Q: Can I stop sharing content with other people with whom I’ve previously shared?

A: Yes. To un-share a file or a folder right click it in the Drawings manager and click Remove Shares.

To remove a specific person from the collaborators list, open the drawing in the editor and select that person’s name on the Share tab. Then you can change that user’s permissions or remove the share entirely.

Q: Are the files I upload secure?

A: We use the best technology available today to host and secure your files. We use end-to-end encryption on all communications between you and the service both on mobile and web. Files are stored on the Amazon Simple Storage Service, one of the world’s most scalable and secure computing platforms, with a ISO 27001 certification and Auditing Standards No. 70 (SAS70) statement on securing customer data.

I hope these answer some questions you might have had. If you have more questions, let us know in the comments section and we’ll get back to you faster than you can upload a file!

Update: we received another question from some of our readers we thought interesting enough to share with everyone. Q: Because AutoCAD WS is free, is it here to stay?

A: While nothing in life is guaranteed, Autodesk is highly committed to supporting new and emerging platforms along side our core AutoCAD product  (hence our division’s name - Platform Solutions and Emerging Business) . This is probably best demonstrated in the addition of robust WS functionality directly into AutoCAD 2012, showcased in yesterday’s Autodesk 2012 global launch event and further demonstrating our commitment to Web, Mobile and WS.

When is the Android version coming for the rest of the world? The Android platform for business purposes suits architects far more than iPad as we utilyze gmail, google sites, and google docs and hate to have to carry more than one device. :o)

      Hi Raymond,

If you watched yesterday’s AutoCAD 2012 event you might have seen Heidi holding a Galaxy Tab Android tablet running AutoCAD WS, so that should give you a strong hint that we are on the case!

AutoCAD WS installed successfully on my iPhone 3G 8GB Firmware Version 3.1.3. However, app will not load. The initial screen comes up, but the app then crashes. Is this a known problem?

    • Daniel

We have found that there may be an issue with running AutoCAD WS 1.2 on iOS 3.1.3 or earlier. We aim to have this cleared up in time for the next release.
